Road Condition Laser Surveying (MMS: Mobile Mapping System)

The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) is a laser-surveying device mounted on the vehicles for the measurement of 3D coordinate data and the acquisition of sequence of images of the road and its surroundings. It does these through a digital camera and 3D laser measuring device.
PASCO utilizes this vehicle measuring technology to enhance efficiency and sophistication in road maintenance and management work. In this way, PASCO provides support for optimizing lifecycle costs and extending the lifespan of social infrastructure.

Road Management that Makes Use of Mobile Mapping System (MMS)

The use of MMS in road condition surveying (roads, structures, facilities, exclusive use) reduces exclusive road use time in site operations, and enables the acquisition of 3D data for roads and their surroundings in an efficient yet low-cost manner. Through this technology, it is possible to gain an accurate and detailed understanding of the current situation.
It is possible to generate data on road sites and road framework, which form the basis for maps, at a scale of 1/500, from the road images and 3D point group data acquired. (Map information level 500 numerical topographic map data)
*Public survey work regulations may be applied to surveying work that makes use of MMS (Rules, Article 17 (Special Provisions for Work Methods and Equipment, etc.))
With MMS, it is also possible to draw up a photographic image of roads without vehicles, which is difficult when using aerial photographs.

Maintenance and Management of Road Facility Inventory and Road Appurtenances (Creating 3D data of the environment around roads)

While it is difficult to determine the specific location of road markings and road appurtenances (lighting, sound insulation walls, guardrails, manholes, telephone poles, signboards, planted zones, road signage, road information management facilities, etc.), it is possible to determine location and obtain accurate location information by assessing the images of the environment around roads and 3D point group data obtained via the MMS.
The information on road markings and road appurtenances is used as a road database, and plays a useful role in the establishment of a comprehensive maintenance and management system for road infrastructure.

Support for Facility Design Using Data Acquired through MMS

It is possible to draw up vertical and horizontal cross-sectional diagrams of an arbitrary point using the 3D point group data obtained using MMS.
*Support for detailed design work using laser measuring data with relative height precision of ±5 mm
3D point group data that is obtained through laser irradiation from below structures such as bridges can be superimposed, and utilized in 3D designs and informational construction.
*Relative height precision is a machine precision specification for the laser device, and is not a marker of how precise the measuring results are.

Disaster Prevention and Disaster Countermeasures

In the event of a disaster that affects roads, such as the collapse of a slope, it would be possible to get a grasp of the scale of damage by comparing data before and after the disaster.

Laser Measurement Device for Installation in Vehicles, with the Ability to Acquire Highly Precise 3D Spatial Information while Driving

Other than undertaking contract work that utilizes the Mobile Mapping System (MMS), PASCO also sells the actual measuring device. The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) collects 3D point group data and digital images using laser scanners (two to four scanners) on the top and bottom of the front (+rear) ends of the device, as well as digital cameras (two to six cameras). It can also display colorized 3D point cloud data/
The device computes position/location and posture to a high degree of accuracy through combined analysis by GPS (three units), IMU, and odometer. GPS correction is carried out through the FKP format (surface correction parameter), angle and acceleration data is obtained through the IMU, while adjustment of travel distance is carried out simultaneously through the odometer (a distance meter that makes use of wheel rotations). In this way, position and posture are accurately computed. *Even in intervals that cannot be complemented by the GPS satellite, interpolation can be carried out using the IMU and odometer.
