Thermal Sensor Surveying (TABI)

The thermal infrared sensor "TABI," mounted on aircraft, is a system that specializes in observation of thermal infrared regions even amongst aircraft remote sensing systems. Integrated with GPS⁄IMU, it is possible to acquire images of the ground surface temperature of the area of observation in a short time, and with a high degree of accuracy. This system was registered as a New Technology Information System (NETIS) on 12 August, 2005.

Merits and Characteristics of TABI (Thermal Airborne Broadband Imager)

Through observation from aircraft, the system is able to acquire ground surface thermal images over a wide observation area in a short time, and with a high degree of accuracy. This works to reduce observation time difference for many observation points, and enhance observation efficiency.

Through integrated GPS/IMU, it is possible to create geometrically corrected digital thermal images with an extremely high degree of location accuracy.

Examples of Application of TABI (Thermal Airborne Broadband Imager)

Among aircraft mounted remote sensing systems, TABI is a system that specializes in the observation of thermal infrared regions. By using it in tandem with GPS/IMU, it is possible to acquire ground surface thermal images of the area of observation in a short time, and with a high degree of accuracy. The system is applied to various areas of research activities, including heat island, active volcanic activity, and heat sources. Research on its application to the management of the growth of agricultural products has also commenced.

■Research on Heat Island and Influent Waters for Rivers

The system is able to gain information on the kinetics of the thermal environment in the form of a time series, through the implementation of thermal distribution studies over many periods of time, such as the early mornings and afternoons of summer, winter seasons, etc.

■Research on Active Volcanic Activity and Heat Sources

The system is able to capture accurate location information for minute heat sources, through the use of thermal images with a high degree of location accuracy.
